Solid instruction both on the water and in classr I strategically gave my wife a Basic Keel Boat course in Jersey City, NJ in late April. The format was 2 weekends. The classroom time covered all material in syllabus in an easy to understand format that progressed from the most basics. The sailing portion was excellent. The instructor let everyone make mistakes such that we could all learn from them. This included trying to sail moderately overcanvassed and then attempting to hove-to fully canvassed in 20 knott of wind. We repeatedly practiced tacking/jibing and all the rules of the road as we evaded cruiseships, tugs and many ferries. The instructors (3) had really laid-back attitudes, yet were able to make everyone feel at ease. They separated couples such that women would learn independant of their spouses. I would not recommend a course in April, the temperature on the water was barely over 40F.
The Colgate 26 is an excellent learning platform. The cockpit is huge and comfortable for at least 6 adults. The boat feels solid and performs well.
Oh... 4 years later my wife has yet to forgive me for the "gift", but we purchased our first sailboat soon after the course.... so all is well |
